In order to increase the funding available for such innovative work the Head of Department has been successful in achieving support through a number of external bids including the following;

  • TVE Graphic Calculators Project.
  • TVE Differentiation in A Level Mathematics
  • TVE Enhancing Links Between Science and Mathematics.
  • Basic Skills Agency. Improving Numeracy Using ILS.
  • Education and Business Partnership. Maths Activity Day at the Local Football Club.

All such ventures have been successful and comprehensive reports produced on the success of each.

Disseminating Expertise

The Head of Department has been involved along with other members of staff in disseminating good practice. Some examples are given below;

  • Target Group Dissemination.
  • LEA Head of Department Maths Trails.
  • ILS in Mathematics.
  • Primary Teachers ILS Training.
  • LEA Mathematics Teachers Organising Maths Activity Days.
  • SCAA Working Party
  • Teacher Placements Using the local football club as a resource.

External Competitions

The department strongly believes in encouraging pupils to participate in mathematical activities outside the classroom.
Pupils from S. Peter’s have been successful in the following:

Design a Logo
Some 50 pupils entered this competition to design a geometrical pattern.
Four pupils were awarded silver certificates and twenty eight pupils were awarded bronze certificates.

Mathematical Challenges
These are national contests organised throughout the year.
There are different levels of entry covering Years 7 to 12.
Entrants puzzle over a multiple choice paper.
Pupils have regularly received gold, silver and bronze certificates.

Maths Relays
Held regularly at Birmingham University.
Students compete in teams of four to answer challenging problems.
Speed of foot and accuracy are both essential.
