Integrated Learning Systems

The Department is gradually increasing its commitment to Information Technology within both lessons and its Schemes of Work.

Information Technology just does not mean computers, but includes Over Head Projectors and Transparencies, as well as Hand Held Technology – Graphics Calculators.

After seven years, we are still using in the Lower School with great effect SuccessMaker. This Integrated Learning System (ILS) enables students to reprise work, to consolidate work and for them to “fill in” holes in their mathematical knowledge and background.

Each Year 7 group is timetabled at least once a week into the Mathematics Computer Suite where they can practice and hone their Numeracy Skills - amongst other things.

We will shortly have Headstart up and running for use with students in the Upper School. This system can be used by members of staff for whole set use, or to test the students’ retention and knowledge of a recently covered topic or can be used by students individually. We have a small supply of the Headstart software, which can be purchased through the Mathematics Department. (Cost £20 – cheques made payable to S.Peter’s Collegiate School)

We also have Autograph on the Network, and staff will shortly be undergoing training on its use and application within lessons. However, the basic work is straightforward – our Year 11 students are already using it for their coursework (AO1).

Other ICT Software packages, which students may come into contact with, include Crocodile Clips and Problem Pictures. The former is an excellent tool for demonstrating some aspects of dynamic geometry. The latter is a collection of nearly 200 mathematical images, which are grouped by themes. Each image can be used individually as there are accompanying tasks and extension materials.

The images contained within Problem Pictures are a valuable starter activity to a lesson – especially when used through the Department Laptop and Projector (both are new acquisitions within the Department).

The intention is that all Mathematics rooms will be equipped with Overhead Projectors by the end of the academic year. This will allow members of the Department to use one of the many Snappies (transparencies) that we have developed over the past few years.

Our final item of ICT is the Department web site – which you have just accessed! – contains many items, which students will find useful (especially the KS3, KS4 & KS5 revision and examination practice materials).
