7 Students' Investigations
"Who's
Been Messing With My Work?"
Someone
has deleted all the mathematical symbols and brackets from
a set of calculations, and the students have to decide which
sign goes where to make the sum correct.
e.g.
2 7 3 = 27

"The "Who's Been Messing Around With My Worksheet"
was hard - but I got through it"
"I
found the "Who's Been Messing Around With My Worksheet"
a little bit hard as I didn't think that you would be able
to get an answer for all of them"

"The
Four Fours Problem"
In
this activity, students are trying to work out how a combination
of the number 4 used in four distinct ways can give any number
between 1 & 100.
e.g.
17 = (4 x 4) + (4 ÷ 4)
Using
the above calculation as a starter, can you see how to get
the numbers 15 and 16?
Student
Comments:
"I enjoyed the four fours, because it was interesting
to know that you can make up to 100 with just 4 fours"
"I
think that the four fours sheet was brilliant because it
was something that challenged me to go back to it again
and again and again………- I even thought
of one in the car!"

Comments:
"I enjoyed doing the puzzles with my friends -
it was quite easy, but I forgot a few things!"
"I
found it quite hard, but we finished it in the end. I really
enjoyed it!"
"I
enjoyed completing and working out how to do it, working
as a team and going on the computer. I enjoyed doing different
shapes, making a poster and getting our photo took."
Students
from Mr. S.Walters' Year 7 Group - Set 7R - practised three
different activities - "Printing Press", "House
of Cards" and "Postman Pat".

Mr.
S.Walters' Year 7 set worked in groups to tackle problems
relating to Ma1 - Using and Applying Mathematics. All problems
were accessible at levels 3/4, but could, in some cases, be
extended further.
Each group had to prepare a piece of display work and to present
these findings in front of the other groups.
Year
8 Students' Investigations
As
part of the Sum It week, Mr. C.Sherrington's Set F in Year
8 were set the Chessboard Problem - how many squares are there
on a chessboard? The answer is not so obvious! What strategies
would you use?

These
students are investigating the symmetry properties that a
chessboard displays - and deciding whether the colours are
important or not.
What
happens when one extra square is added to the side length
of the chessboard? Would this affect the symmetry properties
or not?
